The comedian lovingly remembered her daughter in a previous interview.
Carol Burnett shared that she still thinks of her daughter every single day. Talking to People, she said that her daughter, Carrie Hamilton, has never left her. Carol admitted that she feels her presence.
Carrie is shared by Carol and Joe Hamilton. He was a producer of The Carol Burnett Show according to Do You Remember.
At the age of 38, Carrie, a waitress and an actress, passed away in 2002 after struggling with cancer.
Before her prognosis, Carrie had dealt with drug addiction when she was a teenager. Fortunately, she overcame that struggle and have lived passed it.
According to Carol, Carrie became sober when she was 17. She was in her third rehab place at the time.
The comedian recalled how her daughter despised her as she pushed Carrie to deal with her addiction.
Carol said, “I came to the conclusion that I had to love her enough to let her hate me.”
She went on to say that things got better for them as mother and daughter when Carrie got sober. Only then did they start to bond and they even worked together. In fact, they work on three plays as co-writers.
When Carrie passed away, they were in the middle of finishing a play. Carol made the decision to finish what they had started even though it was very difficult for her to do.
She recalled that she had trouble getting out of bed. What pushed her to get up and finish the job was Carrie. Carol said she owed it to her daughter to finish the show, as well as to the director, Hal Prince.
“I got on a plane and said a little prayer to Carrie, and said, ‘I’ve got to do this alone. Don’t leave me alone. Give me a sign that you’re with me,’” said Carol.
There were many signs that made Carol sure that she was never alone.
When she reached the hotel, she saw a bouquet of birds of paradise flowers in her room. Carol shared those were Carrie’s favorite flowers.
Next was during dinner, she was given a champagne bottle that was labeled ‘Louise.’ It was Carrie’s middle name.
Lastly, Carol explained why she considered raining on the opening night another sign. She explained that she and her daughter loved the rain.
